FAQ on Open Ended Coding

Where respondents can write whatever they like are called open-ended questions. Here a response is known as a verbatim. ‘Coding’ or ‘tagging’ each response with one or more codes helps capture what the response is about, and in turn, summarise the results of the entire survey effectively.

Open-ended questions allow respondents to include more information, including their feelings, attitudes and understanding of the subject. While closed-ended questions do not allow the respondent to explain that they do not understand the question or do not have an opinion on the issue.

Open-ended questions cut down on two types of response error and questions here allow respondents to include more information including feelings, attitudes, and their understanding of the subject.

Without changing the words, Verbatim is defined as an exact repetition. In other words, when you quote someone exactly without changing anything, that is termed as verbatim.
